ARC I. After tragically losing both his mother and father at the age of ten, Barnes was separated from his younger sister and sent to Camp Lehigh, where he spent his time as a ward of the state, and later, a camp mascot. At the age of fifteen, he had begun to set up a rather profitable and unofficial business supplying soldiers with items that were hard to come by at the time.He later was trained in hand to hand combat by British Commandos, and acted as a selective military operative, eventually undergoing extensive training to become Captain America’s sidekick and a counterexample to Hitler Youth. At the age of sixteen, he and Steve Rogers devoted their time to being costumed freedom fighters, special operatives, and public mascots for the war. He spent much of his time freeing Nazi prisoners, liberating concentration camps, and carrying out missions that were deemed to be to dangerous for Captain America's reputation.In late 1945, whilst in London pursuing the Nazi scientist, Baron Heinrich Zemo, he was believed to be killed in action after a plane explosion.

ARC II. After his preserved body was discovered by a Russian submarine, he was taken into their custody and placed in cryostasis until 1954, when he was fitted with a cybernetic left arm and molded into the perfect soldier, frequently being brainwashed with all traces of his past life wiped from his memory.Indoctrinated to hate the West, he began to be used as a tool for the KGB, specifically under the control of Department X for their Black Widow Ops Program. It was here that he acted as a trainer and mentor for those in the Red Room Academy, as well as becoming the handler of the unsuccessful Wolf Spider Ops Program.Due to being deemed too unstable, when he was not needed for an operation or assassination, he was kept in cryostasis to cease his ageing and effectively "muzzle" him. This process repeated, with many attempts on Bucky's part to escape that only resulted in being re-captured and brainwashed, until the eventual collapse of the USSR in 1991.

ARC III. After the collapse of the USSR, the Winter Soldier was passed around between former KGB operatives, various names claiming ownership over him and using him and his abilities to further their agenda.Former high - ranking member of the Soviet KGB, General Aleksander Lukin, was the last handler to have control over Barnes before he broke free from his conditioning. During a mission gone awry, he was reunited with his former partner, Captain America, who used the Cosmic Cube to partially restore his lost memories.

ARC IV. After having his memories partially restored by the Cosmic Cube, he was overwhelmed with guilt and remorse about his past actions, decisively destroying the Cube and fleeing the scene to avoid being taken by his former handler yet again, unaware that Red Skull had transferred his consciousness into Lukin's body.He finds himself hiding out in Serbia attempting to recover pieces from his past and work towards eliminating Lukin. It was here that he and Steve Rogers fought side by side for the first time in decades. Barnes was unable to properly face him, fleeing once more and eventually scrapping his plan to seek out Lukin.It was during this time that he began to learn about the impact that Captain America had had in inspiring contemporary young heroes, and catching up on things he had missed whilst under the control of the KGB and in cryostasis.Upon emerging from hiding in the later years, Barnes realised he could no longer hide or run from his past, the whole world wanting answers in regard to the former enemy agent of the United States, thus beginning the process of his trial and eventual (though conditional) governmental pardon.

ARC V. After being reunited with former allies such as Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, and those affiliated with S.H.I.E.L.D, etc., Barnes finally had the opportunity to focus on repairing his mind and healing from decades’ worth of abuse and torture. While still accepting government sanctioned missions and using his abilities to aid in the right causes alongside his friends, he now spends his days in an isolated cabin in his home - state of Indiana with his rescue therapy cat, Alpine.Though regaining all of his memories is a painful work in progress, he still strives to collect every piece; he knows he can never fully move forward until he has faced every bit of what he's done, and thus aims to track down faces from the past to find what was lost and make amends.

An orphaned Army brat turned Captain America's sidekick disappeared and was presumed dead near the end of WWII. Unbeknownst to most, he was turned into the KGB's secret weapon at the hands of their subdivision, Department X, during the Cold War. Given a version of the super soldier serum and fixed with a metal arm that gave him superior strength, Barnes was repeatedly brainwashed and placed into a cryogenic chamber for the better part of seventy years, taken out only when needed for assassination missions and to assist in training the members of Department X's Black Widow Ops and Wolf Spider Ops programs.Long after the collapse of the USSR, and having had his memories restored by the Cosmic Cube, Bucky now grapples with the effects of his PTSD on a mission of healing and personal redemption; whether it be occasionally helping out the Avengers, leading the Thunderbolts as The Revolution, or helping people escape a life of crime and start over, Barnes is now in the midst of reclaiming his identity all whilst attending a lot of therapy sessions with his cat, Alpine.

MODERN.

Following in his deceased father's footsteps, James Barnes enlisted in the Army straight out of high school, with every intention of having a long lasting and fulfilling career within the military. Having served for several years on the ground and in the front lines, he lost his arm in combat and his career was cut short. Honorably discharged, with only a Purple Heart and a metal prosthetic arm to show for it, Barnes' life continued to crumble.Battling PTSD alone and with little support adjusting to civilian life, Barnes wound up in prison, shaving off time by being an inmate firefighter through their conservation camp program. Upon his release, he became a firefighter full time.
